Then I saw the option to prepare the partition down in the corner. Clicking on that and choosing NTFS no other choice got me going again. Total install time from that point on was around 30 minutes. Note of caution here Just press continue and let it boot to the desktop. Once the desktop loads, select the "search" function at the bottom of the Start menu and enter "regedit. When the registry editor loads, follow the directions given in the link.
Close the registry editor and go back to the Start menu. This time find the command prompt and do a right click on it. Select "Run as Administrator". Now follow the instructions in the other link. Once you're finished, reboot Windows 7. After it boots to the desktop, find the activation wizard and execute it. It'll respond in about 30 seconds or so and tell you that activation was successful and that you're running "Genuine Windows".
Passed genuine Windows validation Hey, that's it. After that it's make adjustments, install programs and whatever. Have fun. Chscag: Thanks for taking the time to write up your experience with installing Windows 7 upgrade. It is not really clear from mcharley94 reply if registry hack was used to install Windows 7 see post This has been a very helpful thread! I did not use any hacks when I did a clean install. Another question I have is, When I had initially installed Vista on my MBP there was a Bootcamp configuration icon present down by the clock, as well as in the start menu, which allowed me to update BC as well as choose which OS I wanted to start as default upon boot, among other things, but since installing Win 7 this option is gone.
Any idea why and how I can get it back? You may very well be correct in your assumption of the educational release, though it was advertised as an upgrade only, and upon initial installation I was given only the choices of "upgrade" or "custom advanced ". It came in the form of an EXE zip file that would not extract and begin installation from within a previous version of a Windows OS as it was supposedly designed to do.
Nov 17, AM in response to clifmeister In response to clifmeister. I just spent an hour on the phone with an Apple support tech, who then transferred me to a senior support person, who said, "this is a Windows problem, we can't help you! Nov 17, PM.
I posted earlier in this thread that I had the identical problem, and was able to address the problem by removing the USB stick that contained the Apple Boot Camp drivers after the Windows installation started. I read it in another thread I beleive. It appears the Windows installer can't proceed unless the USB stick is removed. Once I did that, it worked. If you wait utnil you're presented with the disk partition screens, it's too late. In the end, I was able to successfully install a clean, licensed, full version of Windows 8 Professional on my MacBook Air using Boot Camp, and everything worked fine except the track pad "tap" features.
To get around that, I found a utility in another support forum thread that I was able to download and run. Mac OSX has some stiff competition on this hardware now. Nov 18, PM. I know this post is dated slightly but I wanted to chime in with some Bootcamp help on the newer vintage MBP laptops.
Just to throw it out there - nearly every Mac I purchase gets hardware hacked the minute it comes out of the box. Here is a very simple way to accomplish the same things that BootCamp does only the right way so Windows will be happy alongside OS X.
Once you've done this you will want to get the WindowsSupport folder for your model of Mac, so launch BootCamp, un-check the top and bottom options so that only the Download Support Files option is selected, indicate that you would like to copy to an external drive.
Tell it to place the folder either on your Desktop or in your Library somewhere. Launch Disk Utility and highlight your primary hard drive. Click the 'Partition' button at the top. Use the slider to create the size of partition you would like for Windows - this will auto-resize your OS X partition. This takes about 3 minutes tops. Install Windows! Once you have completed the re-partitioning action, simply shut down your machine, and restart it holding the Option Alt button.
The alt button will cause the system to eventually show you a choice of bootable disks. Windows Installer - the Windows installer will launch after a period of time, use the 'Next' button and accept the license terms and you will be brought to a window to select the destination for the Windows install.
Highlight this partition and the 'next' button should un-grey and become available, if it does, click it and the Windows installation will proceed. If the 'next' button does not un-grey you will want to highlight the partition and select 'Format', once that completes it will un-grey the 'next' button and the install will proceed. Once the installation is done it will need to reboot a few times normal Windows install procedure at this point.
Once you have done this, your USB thumb or external drive can be set aside as it will not be needed until later. Open Boot Camp Assistant.
Select the magnifying glass at the top right of the screen and search for "Boot Camp Assistant". Select the program to open it. Click Continue at the bottom right corner of the window. Insert your Windows 7 installation disc. Uncheck the box that says " Download the latest Windows support software from Apple " Click Continue.
A recommended amount of 30GB of space was partitioned in the example image below, however, if you wish to adjust the partition size simply click and drag the slider to adjust to your preference. Click Install. Boot Camp will create the Windows partition.
