When complete, reboot, then apply the registry changes I mentioned, then change the resolution to another resolution, then back to the one you want and it should work. I have had people email me in the past saying that the AMD driver was interfering with this fix, so if you use the Microsoft supplied video driver and your video card follows the criteria I mentioned in the post, it SHOULD work.
I've used this guide in the past and it's worked brilliantly, but following a large windows update yesterday it no longer seems to stick. The same as the poster above, the changes I make in the registry don't remain after changing the resolution and back again, but the black borders do. I tried uninstalling the AMD drivers and rebooting as you recommended but windows at first didn't have a x option for me to try and then auto re-installed the AMD drivers As stated in the article, you can't use the AMD drivers or it won't work.
If it is installing AMD drivers, try rolling back to stock drivers. If that doesn't produce proper resolution for you then consider purchasing a new video card that supports Direct X My suggestion would be an Nvidia Geforce GT if you're on a budget as it runs Direct X 12 and uses very low power consumption, plus it will have supported and proper drivers for Windows It's amazing! Hi Dennis, thanks for your reply. I deleted all trace of AMD software and drivers from the system but windows 'cleverly' reinstalled the driver all on it's own.
So, it seems we've come to the same conclusion - the GT is the exact card I identified yesterday as an ideal intermediary upgrade for this machine, my HTPC which, let's face it, is using pretty old hardware.
Low power, silent and cheap. I'll eventually upgrade the rest, but this should do for now as a quick fix. Thanks again for your help. I also created an account to thank you so much for these instructions, they fixed the screen right up.
Thank you so much for helping me solve the problem of the black borders on my screen; however, I have two screens and this solution only solved the problem with one of them, the other still with the black border. Any suggestions? I just applied the fix to both of those registry entries changing 08 to 00 , one at a time, and it worked like a champ. If you have a dual monitor, I suspect that you should be able to find two separate registry entries like I did.
To be honest it was a bit scary for me to use the registry, but it worked perferctly and fast. I signed up to thank you for this. I have an older AMD with Win10 - been trying to solve this for days! Thanks for the expertise!
Worked like a charm!! One morning this border just showed up. I tried adjusting the settings obviously, and then stumbled upon your article. I registry hack seemed extreme for me, so I poked around with my laptop settings and voila!
I have a touch screen, so I just swiped left from the right side to bring up the settings panel. I chose "Project" which gave me the screen projection options.
I changed first to duplicate and then back to PC Screen Only and it "reset" the borders back to the full screen. Might be an easier fix for your less experienced readers. Thanks for the article though!
I have to do this after almost every big windows update. I am constantly referring back to this site to make sure I do it correctly. Thank you again for posting this. Thank you so much! I will say, on this last one Once I restarted and then followed your directions I appreciate you! From the same panel of screen resolution, just go to "view card properties", then on "monitor" tab.
Once setted the frequency, I had to change the registry keys again since the numbers reappeared. And then it worked. Thank you. The instructions work EXCEPT that with this version of Windows and likely any ones that are newer I had to create and then log in with a local admin account.
Otherwise, Regedit, even though it was invoked under a Command-prompt with administrative rights, didn't properly save the edits to the needed registry keys. I am using an external monitor with an HDMI cable. Its native resolution is x at 60Hz. I changed both "" and "" devices' entries for xx60, wiping out the 08 with And it worked! Shrinking the screen size of your Windows PC back to normal should not be a hassle if you follow the steps above.
If the resolution is not the problem, then it may be the display size. Try out the options given to get the perfect fix.
